Who makes real lemonade anymore?
We all know the kid around the corner is just selling you Kool Aid mix for $3 a glass. Since when did Kool Aid get so expensive, anyway?
Before I get all holy-er than the rest of ya’ll, I’ll admit that I have a jar of the sugary substance in my cabinet. You know, for lemonade emergencies.
When all you want is a cold, super sweet, mildly tart beverage.
It hits the spot, I tell you.
But my taste buds needed a sugar break. So I put the mix away and pulled out a whole bunch of citrus, made a simple syrup and HELLO — lemonade.
Recipe for grapefruit lemonade
- 3 grapefruits
- 9 lemons
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups additional water
- lemon slices for garnish
- lots of ice
Bring the sugar and 2 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan to make a simple syrup. Let it cook until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and set aside.
Juice the grapefruit and lemons, adding the juice to a large pitcher. Stir in the cooled simple syrup and add the additional water. Stir.
Pour in to a glass filled with ice. Add slices of lemon for pretty-ness. Enjoy.
